Glossary of terms used in The Widening Gyre

Queen’s Protectors – Royal guards of Queen Maelyss of Iteriar

​

Militia – Iteriar’s standing army

​

Guardians – A warrior Order set up to capture and imprison fluxers and their artefacts, based in northern Iteriar at the Keep they have a special fighting technique which makes them lethally fast

​

Ancient fluxer artefacts – Items made by the ancient fluxers to increase and focus their powers

​

Fluxer – Some people are born with the ability to see and harness the magnetic field of the planet and use it to manipulate the natural world around them. Fluxers usually come into their powers at puberty, often triggered by an extreme emotion. They are imprisoned or killed when they are caught.

​

Charotin – A fluxer enhanced horse bred for war and bonded to a Guardian

​

Zila – A fluxer enhanced bird of prey, trained and used as messenger birds

​

Shrooms – Mushrooms grown in underground caves for food and clothing, and the staple diet of the vast majority of people

​

Threads – A terminal disease that attacks shroomcave workers lungs when they have not been sufficiently protected by breathers. Caused by the shroom spores, the disease congests the lungs and produces long filaments growing from facial orifices

​

Breathers – Protective masks for shroomcave workers

​

Deluge – Great storms of rain which sweep the world randomly and frequently, due to the ancient fluxers’ war which reversed the polarity of the world, making crop production above ground almost impossible.

​

Divines – Missionaries of the Ataxan One God tasked with converting heretics and mistering to the faithful.

​

Eyes of God – Militant order of the One God.

​

Koss – King of the Umquai desert tribes

​

Sigir – Water diviner of the Umquai desert tribes

RELIGIONS

Heretic Countries:

  • Iteriar – Worships Cynosura, the star Goddess. Her Nightlords are believed to collect and judge the souls of the dead.

  • Modorro – Worships the god Peris who has a dual sexuality, both male and female.

  • Umquia – Worship Alazin the god of fire.

  • Qal ‘attar – Follows the many branching path, an ideology.

  • Arbresse – Worships Olorian, the god of the Living Wood. His nemesis is his twin sister, Chehalis the Destoyer.

  • Khrobet – Worship the Guardian Spirits

​

Empire of Ataxa:

  • All the conquered countries in the Empire are required to worship the One God, his nemesis is Alzhon The Despoiler.
